"Νενικήκαμεν!" : Nenikikamen – We were victorious!
This historical word was the last one the first Marathon-runner Pheidippides was able to pronounce before he dropped dead, after he had ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek Victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. This victory gave the Greeks confidence in their ability to defend themselves and belief in their continued existence. Is also inspired the artists of that time – resulting in the creation of the fantastic buildings and statues of the ‘Golden Age’ of Greece. The battle is therefore considered to be a defining moment in the development of European culture in general.

This historical event is honoured and celebrated every year by thousands of
athletes by taking part in Marathon-runs, organized all over the word.
Nothing can be compared though with running the authentic Marathon, the way Pheidippides ran after the battle: the 42km from Marathon to Athens – the Athens Classic Marathon.
